Seguin’s 180th Birthday

One hundred and eighty years ago on August 12, 1838, 33 Texas Rangers laid the foundation for the City of Seguin, creating history and culture that has made Seguin what it is today. Along with a day dedicated to celebrating the City of Seguin’s birthday, the Seguin Conservation Society will celebrate their accomplishments this year on selling the Moore House to a wonderful couple who plan on completely renovating it, the opening of their properties to the community throughout the year with newly redone porches at the historic Campbell Log Cabin and the Calaboose that was restored last year.

This annual bash is celebrated with dozens of community members with a barbeque dinner and refreshments. Meal tickets are available at Gift and Gourmet and Chamber of Commerce or you may also call 830-372-6168. When asked why people should come out this year, Steve Tschoepe, Seguin Conservation Society Treasurer stated, “The music is great and homemade ice cream is over the top. The meal is delicious. Also the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Mounted Posse will be delivering the birthday proclamation to be read by Mayor Don Kiel”.

That’s right, of course this wouldn’t be a complete celebration without the traditional homemade ice cream competition. Everyone is invited to enter their ice cream to be judged by 3 celebrity judges with categories to include Best Vanilla, Best Pecan, Best Specialty and People’s Choice. The Seguin Conservation Society invites those interested in submitting their ice cream for the contest to contact Kay Martin at (830) 305-2482 for more details.

Steve Tschoepe stated, “It is a fun family event that everyone looks forward to every year. It has become kind of a homecoming where you see people you haven’t seen in a while. People enjoy sitting under the big oak trees, enjoying a delicious barbecue dinner and then the ice cream with some great entertainment”.

The party will be on Friday, August 10 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Heritage Village’s First Church and the Campbell-Hoermann Log Cabin Complex in the 200 block of E. Live Oak Street.

Throughout the evening, entertainment will be provided by Kirk Herbold and Friends at 6:15 p.m., and Guadalupe County Sherriff’s Mounted Posse to ride in on their horses with a proclamation celebrating Seguin’s milestone of 180 years.

The evening will include the Seguin Conservation Society’s Annual Meeting and election of officers. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m., and following will be announcement of the ice cream contest winner.
