Recap of 2019 in downtown Seguin

By: Jasmyne Perry, Main Street and CVB Intern

With the beginning of 2020 quickly approaching, Seguin Main Street wants to take some time to reflect and celebrate everything accomplished in 2019! At the beginning of 2019, Seguin Main Street anticipated the completion of several projects including new residential developments, historic preservation projects and completion of construction projects.

Residential Developments

Ten new apartments were completed in downtown during 2019. The addition of second floor residences to the district will create an active downtown 24/7 as the new residents will be the frequent customers of downtown businesses. Seven one bedroom efficiencies opened in March at 205 East Court and three two-bedroom apartments opened in April at 212 South Austin Street.

Historic Preservation

Seguin Main Street saw 2019 as an opportunity to strengthen its historic preservation efforts. This included the adoption of a new preservation ordinance and the even more important historic resource survey. This survey, completed in August, found additional buildings eligible for designation as landmarks either at the local, state or federal level. This survey also honored the Seguin heritage museum for their vast photo collection and encouraged Seguin Main Street to assist in digitizing their collection. During 2020, Main Street will be enacting several of the recommendations that were included in the survey.

Rehab of Buildings

In 2018 the people of Seguin heard rumor of a pizza kitchen being added to Seguin Brewing at 109 W Gonzales. Well now it is here, offering delicious pizza, wings, salads and more! Right around the corner at 109 North Austin, Schultz Saloon opened after a year of construction. The saloon offers a wide variety of whiskeys and live music. There have also been major improvements to the former Starke Sleep Shop, with one of the four buildings being completed and put on the market. The remaining two buildings will be completed in 2020.

Sidewalk Improvements

In 2017, Seguin Main Street was awarded a Texas Capital Fund grant for rehab of sidewalks throughout the south side of downtown. The project was completed in early 2019 with over 700 of linear feet of sidewalks repaired and over a dozen ADA ramps added. The sidewalks will assist in making downtown accessible for all.

Successful events

Seguin has some fun annual events such as Earth Day, Artsfest, Pecan Fest, the Biggest Small-Town 4th of July Parade, and Sip-N-Stroll to name a few. Each year Seguin Main Street strives to make these events bigger and better. In 2019 we had Snickers bring their limited addition Pecan Candy Bar and we hosted over 100 different vendors selling a variety of items at Pecan Fest. This year we also sold 1,000 Sip-N-Stroll mugs that featured the old fire house and filed the streets with people, holiday cheer, and of course hot cocoa.

Happy New Year!

With a successful 2019 in the books, Seguin Main Street is excited for all that is in store for 2020. We hope to see everyone downtown this year and supporting this great city we call home. So goodbye 2019 and hello 2020, Happy New Year!
