With the end of 2018 and the beginning of a new year quickly approaching, Seguin Main Street wanted to take the time to reflect on and celebrate the successes in downtown Seguin during 2018. Here are some of the highlights for the year.
To start, downtown Seguin welcomed numerous new businesses to the district including Kimber Grace Boutique, Vape Case, Texas Poker Room, Saenz Boot and Shoe Repair, Funky Monkey Vintage, Seguin Pharmacy and more. Creating a unique environment, these small businesses help to create a unique sense of place for our town making downtown more attractive to visitors and locals. Plus all these new businesses have brought our first floor vacancy rate to its lowest level in decades.
Next, is the physical improvements of sidewalks and ramps; thanks to the Texas Capital Fund, a program of the Texas Department of Agriculture, as well as the City of Seguin, numerous sidewalk ramps were installed and hundreds of linear feet of sidewalks were replaced. Additionally, ADA improvements were made at Court Street Coffee Shop improving access for all into the shop.
“We strive to make downtown Seguin a pedestrian friendly environment by improving the accessibility for all to visit downtown,” said Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street & CVB Director, “By addressing sidewalks that were cracked, had inappropriate cross-slopes and roots growing through the concrete, the City of Seguin is ensuring that it is safe for people of all abilities to stroll through downtown Seguin.”
If you haven’t already noticed, Seguin knows how to work hard and celebrate big. Which brings us to our next happening – a full calendar of special events including July Fourth festivities, PecanFest, and Holiday Stroll. This year had some of the largest turn outs at these events.
The fourth of July weekend was full of patriotism. Bringing together the community at Freedom Fiesta, Patriotic Concert in the Park, Fireworks Fiesta, and the Biggest Small-Town Fourth of July Parade. PecanFest 2018 had the highest attendance with locals and visitors. Individuals who attended the three day festival partook in our third annual Hats Off to Juan Seguin Pub Crawl, a Nutty Fun Run, Trade Days in downtown, the Texas Mead Fest and heritage activities at the Big Red Barn, Heritage Village, and Sebastopol.
Ending 2018 with everyone’s favorite time of the year, the three-day weekend of Holiday Stroll was a huge success. Day one started with area organizations, churches and businesses in holiday gear strolling through downtown Seguin spreading holiday cheer at the annual Holiday Stroll Lighted Parade. Day two, over 40 participating businesses gathered together in downtown Seguin for the traditional Sip n’ Stroll serving their homemade hot chocolates. With 40 “chocolatiers,” 2018 was the largest number of participating businesses that we’ve seen over the years. The streets of downtown were filled with the community who had their mugs in hand. Day three was all about kids, snow and Santa at the North Pole Stroll. Central Park was lighted with smiles and holiday cheer.
Kramm stated, “Downtown Seguin has been the heart of the community this year. We are looking forward to seeing what 2019 has in store for us. Main Street is grateful for all the support of the community in making downtown rich and vibrant.”
