Join the Journey

The community is invited to follow the footsteps of Mary and Joseph in their search for Bethlehem. The annual Las Posadas, a re-enactment of a Christmas story, will be held in downtown Seguin hosted by area churches.

The Las Posadas tradition, a nine-day procession, has been celebrated in Mexico for 400 years. In Seguin, it is a one-night event that is enhanced by candles and lights carried by our very own community as they stroll through the historic downtown district. Mary and Joseph will lead the crowd of followers from City Hall to the Heritage Museum, the Court House and ending at St. Andrews Episcopal Church.

At each location, Mary and Joseph will ask for quarter and be turned away by inn keepers. In music form, the dialog will be sung between the inn keepers and the crowd. After finding room at the St. Andrew’s Church, the crowd is invited in for cookies, bonuelos and a warm beverage. Christmas carols will be sung to end the evening.

“Celebrating the birth of Christ is what Christmas is all about.”, said Fanny Harkins, a long-time volunteer. “Seeing the community uniting in downtown makes it that much more special.”

Every year, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, St. James Catholic Church and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church hope to get everyone in the holiday spirit with celebration. “It is a pleasant sight to see the community gathering in the downtown district, especially during the holidays.”, said Kyle Kramm, Main Street and CVB Director.

Everyone is invited to participate as the event is non-denominational and is free of charge. Las Posadas starts at 6 pm on Sunday, December 16 at City Hall. For more information contact any one of the participating churches.
