“The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance has been conducted in Seguin, TX for twenty-four years. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Planning Committee was organized in 1995 as a non-profit, community-based organization to serve as a multi-cultural citizen’s group to help preserve the legacy and example of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to plan appropriate ceremonies and programs in conjunction with the King Holiday”, said Regina Lee, Chairman of the Martin Luther King Jr. Planning Committee.

This event has been a growing event beginning as a one-day event, going to a three-day event, to the now five-day celebration. Events include the Seguin Baptist Minister’s Union featuring guest speaker Lester J. Gillespie Sr. on Thursday, Jan. 16 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church and the Seguin ISD Choir Showcase on Friday, Jan. 17 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

“In 2016, we were honored to have Seguin ISD elementary and middle school choir and music departments participate,” said Lee about the musical performances continuation to present day, “Many hours have been utilized to teach the students social skills, ways to enrich their lives, vocabulary and finances.”

Saturday will host the traditional dinner theatre starting at 5:00 p.m. with a social hour, dinner being served at 6:00 p.m. and the play starting at 7:00 p.m. The meal and show will be held at the Seguin Coliseum. This year’s title is “Entertaining Angles” and tickets are $30 per ticket; $15 with student ID. This dinner will host a variety of favorite legendary African American hot dishes and desserts prepared and served to hundreds of Seguinites.

On Sunday, Jan. 19, the ceremonies continue with Gospel Fest at First Baptist Church and the event concludes on Monday, Jan. 20 with the Symbolic March from TLU’s Wupperman Theater to Central Park. The entire community is encouraged to join in the march down Court Street to reflect on the dream of justice, peace and equality. At the end of the march, the community will celebrate in Central Park with music and speakers including Mike Washington, a former TLC Quaterback and current Associate Director of Admissions at UT Austin.
