What do you get a city turning 181? Well nothing, but you throw it a birthday bash for sure – and that is exactly what the Seguin Conservation Society will do on Friday, August 9 at Heritage Village.
181 years ago, on August 12, 1838, 33 Texas Rangers under the oak trees along the banks of Walnut Springs Creek laid the foundation for the City of Seguin. Since that day, Seguin has grown and prospered and there is much to celebrate as the city turns 181.
This annual bash is celebrated with the community coming together for a barbeque dinner catered by Next Door Catering. Meal tickets are available in advance for $15.00 at Gift & Gourmet, Keepers and the Seguin Chamber of Commerce, or there is a limited supply for $20.00 at the door. Live entertainment for the evening is being provided by local musician Kirk Herbold and friends.
A crowd favorite of the birthday party is the homemade ice cream contest. Anyone is invited to enter their ice cream to be judged by 3 celebrity judges with categories to include Best Vanilla, Best Pecan, Best Specialty and People’s Choice. The Seguin Conservation Society invites those interested in submitting their ice cream for the contest to contact Rebecca Kallies at (830) 534-8799 for more details and bring their ice cream to the First Church by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 9.
Seguin Conservation Society President Steve Tschoepe encourages everyone to come out for a fun evening.
“The music is great and homemade ice cream is over the top. The meal is delicious. Also, the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Mounted Posse will be delivering the birthday proclamation to be read by Mayor Don Kiel,” said Tschoepe, “It is a fun family event that everyone looks forward to every year. It has become kind of a homecoming where you see people you haven’t seen in a while. People enjoy sitting under the big oak trees, enjoying a delicious barbecue dinner and then the ice cream with some great entertainment”.
The party will be on Friday, August 10 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Heritage Village’s First Church and the Campbell-Hoermann Log Cabin Complex in the 200 block of E. Live Oak Street.
Throughout the evening enjoy your meal, live music and sampling the homemade ice cream. At 6:15 p.m. the Guadalupe County Sherriff’s Mounted Posse will ride in on their horses with a proclamation celebrating Seguin’s milestone of 181 years. The evening will include the Seguin Conservation Society’s Annual Meeting and election of officers. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m., and following will be announcement of the ice cream contest winner.
