Seguin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is presenting Fiesta Patrias full of music, food, and fun to fill Seguin’s Central Park on Saturday, September 15. The celebration begins at 4:00 p.m. and will continue all afternoon and evening.
The fiesta is being held to celebrate the date of Diez y Seis de Septiembre. The origin of the Diez y Seis de Septiembre festival dates back to September 16, 1810, when the impoverished peasants of Mexico, declared their independence from Spain. Father Hidalgo y Costilla, a village priest who is known as the father of Mexico (just as George Washington is considered the father of the United States of America) gave the call for independence to seek freedom, liberty, and equality for all citizens of Mexico. In memory of the long struggle for independence from Spanish rule, the week of Sept. 16 marks Fiestas Patrias (patriotic festivals) with music, dancing, and traditional foods for Hispanics of Mexican decent and gives them an opportunity to experience the cultural traditions and the rich heritage of many generations.
“The Seguin Guadalupe County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has been celebrating Fiestas Patrias for 29 years. The goal of the Fiestas is to celebrate the cultural traditions, to bring visitors and tourists to Seguin to promote our city, and as a fund raiser for the organization” said Nick Spence, Chamber President.
Entertainment slated to perform on Saturday are DA Krazy Pimpz, Conjunto Cats and Hunter Chavez/Los Cazadorez. There will be games for the kids along with food and arts & crafts vendors that will be selling tamales, buenlos, popcorn, hot dogs, cheese steaks, funnels cakes and mangonadas and street tacos.
The chamber is still accepting vendors for the event. If you are interested in being a food vendor or an arts & craft vendor, contact the chamber at (830) 372-3151.
“Downtown Seguin is the heart of our community and is a gathering place for all cultures to celebrate their heritages,” said Kyle Kramm, Main Street and CVB Director, “We encourage everyone to come out and celebrate in downtown Seguin.”
The event is free to the public all day. For more information, contact the Seguin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at (830) 372-3151 or visit the Chamber’s web site, http://seguinhispanicchambertx.com/.
