Comal Community Band Kicks Off the Summer Concert

June 3rd marks the beginning of the Central Park Summer Concert Series hosted in historic downtown Seguin by the Seguin Main Street Program.

Kicking off the series will be the talented Comal Community Band which is conducted by Alfred Tapia, making it the bands seventh time to kick off the summer sounds. The San Antonio native served in the Army as a musician and Bandmaster until he retired in 1984. During his service Tapia conducted bands in Vietnam, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, the German Democratic Republic, France and Morocco. He has remained an active musician in the San Antonio area since including being a member of many other bands, teaching, and also conducting.

According to their website, the Comal Community Band “[Performs] as an American show band; the musical group has a large repertoire that includes German Music, show tunes, Big Band, rousing marches, classical arrangements, military theme songs, and seasonal music. The band also performs selections from the modern wind band genre.”

The band will perform a variety of big band music, polkas and more as they kick off the 2018 Central Park Summer Concert Series. The band consists of around 40 volunteer musicians who enjoy traveling around Central Texas to perform for audiences. The Comal Community Band is a local favorite and the Seguin Main Street Program is glad to have them return.

This year’s concert series will feature five area bands on Sunday evenings. On June 10th Teatro de Artes with a Mexican American performance, followed by Natalie Rose on June 17th playing a variety of county music. The last Sunday in June, the 24th, will feature the cover band, Phil Luna & The Lunatics. Finally on July 1st the San Antonio Symphonic Band will perform a patriotic concert to continue the weekend celebration of Independence Day.

Food will be for sale by a local Boy Scout troop to help fundraise for camping activities. The concerts will be on Sundays starting at 7:00 p.m. and end at 8:30 p.m. The family-friendly concerts are free and offers something for almost every musical taste. Bring a chair or blanket and sit back, relax, and enjoy!
