Celebrate National Preservation Month: This Place Matters

In honor of May being National Preservation Month, the Seguin Main Street Program will feature local preservation efforts in its weekly column.

Led by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, communities all across the United States are celebrating their stories, their past, their landmarks – their history as part of National Preservation Month. Started in 1973, preservation month is an opportunity to highlight the importance of preservation efforts to heritage tourism, social justice and sense of place.

Seguin is part of the celebration and you can join the Seguin Main Street Program and Historic Preservation & Design Commission in celebrating National Preservation month by:

1.) Shop Local in Downtown Seguin

Downtown Seguin is filled with unique shops located in some of the very first buildings built in Seguin. These buildings and businesses are preserving Seguin’s story and unique sense of place and when you shop with downtown businesses, you are ensuring that they have the money to reinvest into maintaining and preserving the buildings.

2.) Share Seguin’s Story to the World

When you are out and about enjoying Seguin’s historic sites, snap a picture, and post on your social media channels with #ThisPlaceMatters. This Place Matters is the rallying cry for ensuring the world knows our historic landmarks are valuable and worthy of being preserved for future generations.

3.) Educate Yourself on Seguin’s History

Take an opportunity to be a tourist in your town by visiting Seguin’s museums. Take a stroll around Heritage Village at the intersection of River and Live Oak. Hear about Guadalupe County before there was a Guadalupe County at the Heritage Museum located at 114 North River Street. Be amazed at the early settlers’ ingenuity with a tour of Sebastopol House at 704 Zorn Street. Pay homage to our City’s namesake with a visit to his burial site at 789 South Saunders Street.

4.) Protect through Designation

Do you live or work in a historic structure? Consider applying to have your home or business listed as a local landmark. Designation of a landmark is how communities preserve their history and ensure it lives on for future generations. Contact the City of Seguin’s Historic Preservation Officer for more information at (830) 401-2448.

5.) Your Story is Seguin’s Story – Share it with us

Do you have a box of old photos that highlight your Seguin experience? Whether its photos of your family home, your family out exploring Seguin, classmates having fun at school or celebrating at an event, share them with Seguin Main Street. We use old photos to track the changes to buildings over the years and your photos have captured those changes without you even knowing it. Bring historic photos to the Seguin Main Street office at 116 North Camp anytime this month and we will scan them in and give the original back to you.
